Located in the southwestern end of New Jersey’s Highlands lies two beautiful natural sanctuaries, Hacklebarney State Park and Voorhees State Park. Voorhees is located in gently rolling farmland while Hacklebarney is located along the Black River corridor. Both are visited by thousands annually and have rich histories. Hacklebarney was a gift of Adolphe and Sarah Borie and Voorhees was made possible by a gift from former governor Foster M. Voorhees.
Historian Peter Osborne is the author of many works of regional history and serves as the full-time director of the Minisink Valley Historical Society in Port Jervis, New York. He is the author of Images of America: High Point State Park and the Civilian Conservation Corps. For Hacklebarney And Voorhees State Parks he has selected almost two hundred images that have been preserved by both state parks, local historical organizations, individuals, agencies and former CCC enrollees. Using these unique images, many published here for the first time, he has compiled a fascinating history of two of central New Jersey’s most popular parks.
The Images of America series celebrates the history of neighborhoods, towns, and cities across the country. Using archival photographs, each title presents the distinctive stories from the past that shaped the character of the community today. Arcadia is proud to play a part in the preservation of local heritage, making history available to all.
